Bert

We found each other in the shadow of goodbye

Two quiet strangers learning how to try

Out of the ashes of an empty room

You were the light that broke through the gloom

The world was heavy, the sky was gray

But you gave me a reason to face the day

When the whole world pushed against us at the door

You were the shelter I was looking for

Through the rough days and the bitter cold

Bert, you are the steady hand I hold

We took the broken parts and made them align

Brought together by God’s own design

I close my eyes and hear the engine roar

Leaving the battles that we fought before

Arms wrapped around you on the open street

Feeling the rhythm of your heartbeat

Just riding the wind and the steady hum

Knowing I'm safe from whatever might come

When the whole world pushed against us at the door

You were the shelter I was looking for

Through the rough days and the bitter cold

Bert, you are the steady hand I hold

We took the broken parts and made them align

Brought together by God’s own design

And when we do something crazy, out of the blue

I just end up laughing right next to you

You lift my spirit when my courage ends

My fierce protector, my closest friend

Through every wild turn and foolish mistake

You are the ground when I start to shake

Life threw its shadows, the years were tough

But your encouraging voice was always enough

I never had to look to see if you were there

You carried the weight that I couldn't bear

No matter the storm, no matter the fight

You stood beside me and made it all right

When the whole world pushed against us at the door

You were the shelter I was looking for

Through the rough days and the bitter cold

Bert, you are the steady hand I hold

We took the broken parts and made them align

Brought together by God’s own design
