The Shirt Off Your Back

Written for Scott ยท FreeCustomSong Original

We never needed much to make a memory,

Just a cabin and a lake to build our family.

Four-wheelers running down those old dirt roads,

Fishing lines and kids in a tube behind the boat.

You wanted Ty and Gavin to look back someday,

And have a childhood they wouldn't trade away.

You might not have had every single thing,

But you gave those boys all the love a dad could bring.

Scott, you'd give the shirt right off your back,

Even when there wasn't much left to give.

You taught our boys that family comes first,

And showed them how a loving husband lives.

From coaching Ty beneath those Friday night lights,

To old muscle cars with Gavin by your side.

You gave them your time, your heart, your life,

If they grow up to be half the man you are, we did alright.

Somewhere along the way, it was just you and I,

Coed softball and summers under St. Croix skies.

Boating down the river with nowhere we had to be,

And Mexico sunsets with your hand holding me.

Then in the middle of a concert, you pulled me on that stage,

Surrounded by the crowd, but I only saw your face.

You got down on one knee and asked me for forever,

Twenty-six years later, I still remember.

Life hasn't always been an easy road to pave,

We've had our share of struggles and harder days.

But through every high and every low,

You never stopped showing up, and it shows.

When I look at the beautiful life we've made,

It's not the things we bought, it's the love that stayed.

It's two grown boys and a lifetime of memories,

And my wonderful husband standing right beside me.

You'd still give the shirt right off your back,

Even when there isn't much left to give.

You love with everything you've got inside,

And show this family how a good man lives.

From those cabin nights to the St. Croix summer sky,

We've packed a whole lifetime into you and I.

I'd still want these memories, I'd still want our boys,

And Scott, I'd still choose you through all the noise.
