Addicts

For fifty years I tried to run and hide

To drown the early trauma deep inside

Drinking, shooting dope, and smoking weed

Escaping memories was all I'd need

I spent two decades locked behind the steel

Just trying to numb the way my soul would feel

I know the dark, I know the heavy chains

I know the needle and the whiskey stains

But there's a hope and future waiting for you

Renal failure brought me to my knees

And gave me faith and discipline at last
